IAB Opposes California Privacy Bill

IAB Opposes California Privacy Bill

On April 25, IAB and more than one dozen organizations sent a letter to the California State Assembly in opposition of AB 2623, a bill that attempts to model California privacy requirements after a federal law that requires a brief table of certain financial data for credit card agreements and marketing, commonly known as the “Schumer Box.” If passed, this bill would force companies to provide incomplete privacy disclosures that will result in consumer misunderstanding and unnecessary concern.

IAB is committed to providing meaningful transparency related to data practices. To this end, we have played and continue to play a central role in developing and administering self-regulatory programs including the Digital Advertising Alliance. We believe self-regulation enables innovative approaches to providing consumers with privacy disclosures, such as just-in-time notice. AB 2623, on the other hand, would create new burdens for businesses, stifle innovation, and cause greater confusion for consumers.
